Skiing in the New Year!

On Monday afternoon Tommy and I left our little princess with her grandma and headed 2.5 hours to Bryce Resort in Bayse, Virginia. The resort is located on Mount Jackson in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia. It is a resort for all four seasons.

On this trip Tommy, our friends Allison and George, and their friends and two kids, and I were heading out there to enjoy some skiing and snowboarding!

We stayed Monday night and Tuesday night and headed back home earlier today.

On Monday we arrived at the resort around 6:30pm. Our friend George had done all of the planning for this trip and had found a GREAT deal for two nights in a 3-bedroom condo minutes away from the slopes. All of us sat around, munched on food, and caught up with each other before retiring for the night. We needed to get some rest for our big ski day the next day!

It was gorgeous here! Of course the biggest draw was the mountain with various slopes, but just being tucked away in nature amongest the trees and stars at night was exactly what we all needed.

While I decided to stick to skiing since I had done it many years before, Tommy having never skied or snowboarding opted to try snowboarding this time around. He really liked it, but admitted it wasn’t as easy as it looked. Everyone we were with said they thought he did amazing for a first-timer – didn’t fall down that much and picked it up really quickly, but Tommy being the perfectionist wasn’t quite sold. Lucky for him I kept saying skiing/snowboarding were going to become our new hobbies so he’d have plenty of chances to practice. đŸ™‚

As for me, even though I hadn’t skied since I was 8 years old or so I thought the practice was just like riding a bike. You don’t forget what you learned previously and can quickly pick it back up. In fact, the ONLY times I fell were coming off the ski lift! For some reason I just wasn’t generating a lot of forward motion coming off the lift and kept leaning backwards until I fell. Other than that I loved zipping down the slopes!

After we were done skiing for the day Allison, George, Tommy and I headed back to the condo to change into our bathing suits – we were going to hit the hot tub for an hour or so before getting ready to go out for New Year’s Eve. The hot tub was awesome, definitely what we needed after a long day of skiing. It felt so good to soak our sore muscles. We met some very interesting and talkative people in there!

Then it was time to PARTY! All of us – Allison, George, and George’s friend Fred, his girlfriend Lisa, her son Travis, and Fred’s stepdaughter Courtney, Tommy and I enjoyed an all-you-can-eat dinner buffet at the main restaurant at the resort. The buffet was pretty good – the highlights were the fried oysters, the prime rib, and the cheesecake – one of the many options we had for dessert.

After dinner Allison, George, Tommy, and I headed to the bar where the official New Year’s Eve party was being held. Unfortunately we had to say goodbye to the family as the bar had a strict “21 and over only policy”.

We danced, drank, chatted and met some more people at the bar.

Typical.

Happy New Year! Cheers to 2014!

So much thanks to Allison and George for organizing this entire trip. We loved every minute of it and are so blessed to have you both in our lives!
