Date Night – Chefs Behind Bars

Happy Hump Day!

This morning started off with my regularly scheduled morning barre class. It kicked my butt (especially after missing a couple of weeks due to my vacation out West and to my half marathon training) and it was amazing.


After skipping a couple of months Tommy and I did an official “date night” last Wednesday. We went to ‘Chefs Behind Bars’, a culinary philanthropy event at Union Market in Northeast D.C. This was the second installment of Chefs Behind Bars – the first was in June at the Liaison Hotel.

The whole premise behind the event is to create and raise interest and money for Share Our Strength’s annual Taste of the Nation – the premier tasting event that benefits ending childhood hunger in the U.S. The idea behind Chefs Behind Bars is to see what various chefs favorite cocktails are and/or what their favorite foodie cocktail ingredients are. Guest chefs man the bar – mixing the special drink they’ve created and collecting tips for Taste of the Nation. The chef who gets the most fan favorite tips will be crowned the reigning Chef Behind Bars. Food vendors are also participate and offer tapas-sized treats – this event included gelato, hot dogs, cheese and crackers, empanadas, and a kim-chee grilled cheese sandwich!

Tommy was my date (naturally) so I purchased the tickets ($40 per person) and for 2.5 hours we were able to eat and drink our way through Union Market. It was great! Important to note: the amount of food we ate was somewhat limited as we had to have a vendor sign-off on our cards we received at registration noting that we had already eaten from a particular booth. The drinks though, were all you can drink! This included all of the delicious cocktails the chefs were making as well as beer (Stella).

The fan favorite cocktail was made by George Pagonis of Kapnos. His drink was called the El Greco: tetteris mastiha, hum, grilled grapefruit, and burlesque bitters.

I liked his drink, but my favorite was this one:

Caution Cherry Tale: made with Barr Hill gin, vermouth, honey, lavender jus, lime, and essence of anger.

I also had a pretty delicious empananda along with this fabulous drink.

Tommy and I also had our fare share of the crackers and cheese that were out for attendees to join from a cheese vendor at Union Market. We liked one cheese in particular so much we bought some to take home.

We really had fun at this event and hope there are more in the future!
